Victorian Architecture

The Victorian architectural period is generally considered to be from 1825 to 1900. Homes built during the early part of the period were usually simple in style, but became more complex and flamboyant following the Civil War. They began to be called Victorians in honor of England’s Queen Victoria who ruled from 1837 to 1901, the longest reign in UK history. Over time many styles evolved, Italianate, Second Empire, Gothic and Queen Anne. The most popular is the Queen Anne with gabled roofs, shingled inserts and bay windows. By the late 1800’s, Victorians took on their bright multi-colors, one of the most distinguished features of the homes.

In San Francisco, the period of 1870 to 1911 produced the majority of the city’s Victorian homes. Most were built of redwood which was quite plentiful and cheap during the period. Redwood resists rot, termites and fire and could easily be cut into the classis trim that Victorians are known for.

Beginning in the early 20th century, people began to favor simpler designs and more open floor plans, and the Victorian period came to an end. However, many Victorians remain and are often the most beautiful homes in the neighborhood. And now, in the beginning of the 21st century, Tradition Real Estate is bringing the beautiful Victorian architecture to Lakeport with Victorian Village, with 95 homes built on the shores of Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California.
